THE SUSSEX SQUADRON
Heraldic of the 226 Squadron
Some teams, especially after D-Day, were equipped with a special ultra high frequency (UHF) radiotelephone called an S-Phone. This radio also allowed ground-to-air communications directly with a radio operator on an aircraft. For this purpose a special squadron, made up of "B25 Mitchell" planes under the command of Squadron Leader Whinney, was created especially for the Sussex missions, which used this S-Phone.
French aviators included Joseph Kessel, famous writer and journalist, and his friend André Bernheim. The latter held phonic communications with the "Sussex" teams on the ground that could then guide the attacks of allied aviation and artillery on the concentrations of tanks and the enemy troops.
